April 16, 2008 The unforgettable phrase “government of the people, for the people, by the people” uttered by Abraham Lincoln in his Gettysburg Address rings as true today as it did 150 years ago. That guiding principle of democracy succeeds only if we – the People - are willing to actively participate in our government, whether by just voting, or by getting directly involved in government at the local, state and national level. In practical application, that means you have to “show up” in force if you want government officials to pay attention. For example, the City of Your voice matters but government officials won’t hear or listen unless you are willing to speak up or speak out. And, doing so as part of a large group helps to get their attention and ensure that your message will be heard, loud and clear.
